Graaff-Reinet is the fourth oldest town in South Africa, after Cape Town, Stellenbosch and Swellendam. Graaff-Reinet’s history includes the Boer War, the ‘Republic of Graaff-Reinet’ and a visit by the British Royal family.
The town, known as the Gem of the Karoo, was named after Cornelis Jacob van de Graaf and his wife Cornelia Reynet. Graaff-Reinet’s history is rich and filled with distinctions like being one of only two towns in the country named after Dutch governors.
During the nineteenth century Graaff-Reinet started out as a bustling trading centre and played a key role in maintaining the ox wagon transport system by offering travellers a place to stay. Today you will find a vast selection of guest houses, hotels and bed and breakfast establishments.
